English--Hungarian glossary of linguistical terms

This site hosts part of the material of a planned larger-scale English--Hungarian glossary or dictionary of linguistics. Without aiming at completeness, this part consists of 172 English entries so far, all concerning onomastics. The selection of the entries will evidently seem accidental since this glossary was created as a by-product of the translation of a book consisting of studies on onomastics (Onomastica Uralica, Vol. 2) and further entries have to be added in any case. Glossaries concerning other branches of linguistics are being prepared, too, basically due to the research work of students with Hungarian and foreign languages as their majors. (The following students have taken part in the preparation of the glossaries so far: Veronika Békési, Lilla Bessenyei, Lilla Földy, Erika Fülöp, Erzsébet Györffy, Balázs Herczeg, Zsuzsa Hoffmann, Fruzsina Hovanecz, Mónika Iván, Eszter Kiss, Viktória Kóczián, Nóra Krasznay, Zsófia Lelkes, Szilvia Marcényi, Enikő Rácz, Attila Sebestyén, Gyula Somogyi, Eszter Szemán, Éva Ubrizsy, Katalin Varga.) The glossaries of the students contain terms of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics, phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax; these, of course, has to be further supplemented and duly edited.

The first publication via the Internet is certainly of experimental character and almost informal. Such format will not allow optimal search among the entries; nothing refers to the use of the terms; and the presentation of the synonymity between certain terms is not always direct (in such cases, the English terms appear as separate entries and the Hungarian ones will be together, separated with semicolons). The part of the material not yet published contains these important pieces of information as well, that is, it provides the field or fields of linguistics (or an other discipline, too) the term belongs to; brief definition if needed; comments; sources (mainly in the case of terms occurring in previous literature or used only by certain authors); abbreviations, if any; grammatical category of the entry; cross-references between the entries. Later on we wish to publish these information, too, at this site. After collecting, proofreading and editing a material of significant quantity, relevance and coverage, it could be desirable to publish the words either in an electronic database format or in a printed dictionary.

We are aware of the risks of the preparation and the publication of such a glossary. Here we stress that it is rather a glossary than a dictionary, so far due to the modest content, too, thus if possible, we would like to avoid the encyclopedical character having regard to our main aim, that is, matching the corresponding English and Hungarian terms. The additional information appears only for easing the usage but we do not wish to explain each entry at all. This, on one hand, would require much more energy as compared to our possibilities and also the involvement the representatives of several subbranches of linguistics, and, on the other, it would unnecessarily extend the work. This undertaking is not easy even in its simplest form, as the terminology of any discipline or profession is diverse both temporally (parallelly with the development of the given field) and spatially (as it undergoes specialization processes) so it is different to catch or delineate and the diverse usage of the terminology often reflects the conceptional differences in the viewpoints of the representatives of the given field. So such a glossary may not present the terminology with a prescriptive attitude (e.g., stating that the Hungarian equivalent of the term utterance is in any case megnyilatkozás), as being user-centred and not representing a certain linguistic paradigm, it rather aims at providing information with a descriptive character. At the same time, it is evident that, co-ordinating English and Hungarian terms together, it fixes the usage somehow. The incidental rigidity of this situation is meant to be relieved by providing synonyms.

The appearance of such a larger-scale material could be regarded as gap-filling since nowadays English is the most important common language of the international scientific life but we have no information about the existence an individual English--Hungarian glossary or dictionary covering more than one fields of linguistics in Hungary. We have only glossaries appearing as the appendices of certain books or studies or the translations of these (e.g., the Hungarian translators of Theodora BYNON’s Historical Linguistics [Hungarian edition: Budapest: Osiris, 1997], Tamás Gherdán and Tamás Számadó, together with Ádám Nádasdy, prepared such a glossary which is to be found at the end of the book). As far as we know, there exists a German--Hungarian (Csaba FÖLDES, Linguistisches Wörterbuch. Deutsch-Ungarisch. Szeged, 1997) and a Russian--Hungarian (Attila SALGA, Orosz nyelvészeti kislexikon. Debrecen, 1993) dictionary of linguistic terms and there are of course many monolingual, so rather explanatory dictionaries either in Hungarian or in English, which, beyond doubt, serve as a great help but will not fulfill the aim set above.
